Treated like royalty, ten-year-old Justin Smith became the first patient at Sanford Children’s Specialty Clinic in the Castle of Care™ on March 2, 2009. Justin and his mom, Keila, were given a warm welcome from physicians, staff and executives as well as a welcome bag full of Sanford Children’s gift items.
Despite the royal welcome, Justin was still nervous about coming to the clinic to see a cardiologist for the first time. To help calm his fears, the nurse and cardiovascular tech used kid-friendly terms to
explain the procedure. The tech also let Justin listen to his heart. Justin’s mom, Keila, commented, “The small gestures mean so much to us.”
Keila further stated, “I was very pleased we were given our test results by the doctor immediately following the procedure. Dr. Sam was very compassionate and genuinely concerned about Justin and how he was feeling. As a parent, I was impressed and satisfied by his knowledge and thoroughness of his questions and exam. All of my questions were answered, and I appreciated that he didn’t make me feel rushed.”
Before leaving the clinic, Justin had his photo taken with Dr. Sam Sopontammarak, a pediatric cardiologist, to document the occasion. Justin will forever be known as the first patient in the Castle of Care™.
