Physicians Recently Performed 1,000th Robotic Assisted Gynecological Procedure
(Sioux Falls, SD) – The physicians at Sanford Clinic Women's Health have successfully completed 1,000 robotic assisted gynecological procedures. This milestone further solidifies them as a leader in the field — having performed more procedures than any other hospital in the region.
To celebrate this accomplishment, the physicians of Sanford Clinic Women's Health will host a public event on April 4, 2009 from noon to 4 p.m. at Sanford Women's Health Plaza. Physicians will be available to meet with the public and will explain why women across the country prefer minimally invasive robotic assisted surgeries. The da Vinci® robot will also be available for the public to "test drive."
The da Vinci® Surgical System
In 2004, Sanford Health became the first hospital in the Midwest to implement the da Vinci® Surgical System, the world's first robotic surgical system. Procedures are performed through incisions no wider than a fingertip. A pencil-size video camera provides magnified, three-dimensional images of the surgical site while the surgeon uses hand controls to guide the system's three arms equipped with surgical instruments.
This system gives surgeons twice the effective viewing resolution for improved clarity and detail of tissue and critical anatomy and enables them to offer patients minimally invasive procedures. Physicians are able to treat conditions as diverse as prostate cancer and hysterectomies that result in less pain, discomfort, blood loss and a quicker return to normal activities for patients.
By choosing robotic surgery over other surgical options, patients are reporting less pain, fewer complications, shorter hospitals stays, faster recovery times, earlier return of urinary control, improved sexual function and less internal scarring.
The Sanford Robotic Surgery Center is the only center in the region equipped with three robotic systems to ensure patients timely attention to their surgical needs. On average, Sanford Health completes approximately 50 robotic assisted procedures per week. For more information, call Sanford Clinic Women’s Health at (605) 328-7700.
