(Sioux Falls, SD) – Sanford Children’s announced today another expansion of its pediatric surgical services. Pediatric surgeons at Sanford Children’s are available to care for acutely injured or ill children 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The recent expansion of the pediatric surgical program, including pediatric surgeon Jon Ryckman, MD, allows Sanford Children’s to now provide 24 hour trauma coverage by a pediatric surgeon. Pediatric surgeons are specially trained in the management and diagnosis of surgical issues in children from birth to early adulthood.
“We have the expertise to take care of children. This includes managing their unique medical needs in the operating room as well as their emotional needs. We are trained to deal with children and their families, and we know how to reduce their fears. We also know how to make them feel more comfortable with what they’re going through,” stated Sanford Children’s Pediatric Surgeon Adela Casas-Melley, MD, FACS.
As members of Sanford Children’s Pediatric Trauma Team, Drs. Casas and Ryckman work closely with Sanford Children’s pediatric intensivists (critical care physicians) along with pediatric subspecialists in the areas of anesthesia, neurology and orthopedics.
