“Our pediatric surgical program has grown tremendously since Dr. Adela Casas-Melley first joined us in 2006,” said H. I am honored to welcome these dedicated professionals to our team as we look forward to opening our new Sanford Children’s Hospital in March 2009. “
About Sanford Children’s Pediatric Surgery Team
Dr. Casas-Melley is one of fewer than 50 pediatric surgeons in the world trained in robotic- assisted surgery. She also performed the first innovative Nuss Procedure in South Dakota on July 2, 2008. Dr. Casas-Melley was affectionately nicknamed "Our Living Angel" by a family whose baby received surgery just hours after birth in Sanford Children’s Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Casas-Melley received her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, completed a residency in General Surgery at Medical College of Georgia, completed a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and is certified by the American College of Surgeons in General Surgery and its sub-board of Pediatric Surgery.
Dr. Ryckman received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, completed a residency in General Surgery at Christina Care Health System, completed a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at Montreal Children’s Hospital and is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Board Eligible in Pediatric Surgery. During his surgical residency, Dr. Ryckman received extensive training in the use of state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical techniques including thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. Using minimally invasive surgical techniques in children reduces the need for narcotics, shortens the length of recovery and minimizes scarring.
Dr. Casas-Melley and Dr. Ryckman, MD are both actively involved in medical education and serve as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor respectively in the Departments of Surgery and Pediatrics at the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota.
Ms. Reitsma received her Master of Science degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and is certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. As a member of the Sanford Children’s Pediatric Surgical Team, Ms. Reitsma provides pre and post-operative care to surgical patients. She is a former pediatric critical care nurse at Sanford Children’s Hospital and is a strong advocate for childhood safety and accident prevention.
