MeritCares Quality Outcomes Recognized in US Newss 2008 Best Hospital Ranking
"This ranking recognizes our commitment to providing the latest advances in health care to the people of this region, as well as the depth of our patient services and our excellent outcomes," said urologist Dr. Theodore Sawchuk. "We are honored to be listed among America's elite medical centers."
The U.S. News ranking judges hospitals in difficult procedures across an entire specialty. Of the 5,453 hospitals evaluated, only 170 scored high enough to be listed in the top 50 for each specialty. MeritCare scored high because it is a teaching hospital and has the availability of key technologies.
MeritCare's urology department was eligible to receive the distinction because they met a specified volume in certain procedures and conditions over the past three years. They were ranked based on the following: reputation, mortality index and care-related factors like nurse staffing and technology. MeritCare scored especially high on mortality index, ranking sixth out of the elite 50. MeritCare had a better mortality index than other medical centers in the upper Midwest who made the list, including Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.
