Sanford Health Announces New Spine Center
Spine Center Emphasizes New Treatment Processes
(Sioux Falls, SD) – Sanford Health announced today a new, integrated approach to treating problems associated with the back and neck. Dedicated to treating children and adults with a broad range of spine conditions, the new Sanford Spine Center will offer a patient-focused approach and innovative surgical and non-surgical interventions for pain and other problems associated with the back and neck.
"Back problems are very common, but our methods of treatment are quite unique," said Thomas M. Boetel, DO, Sanford Spine Center Medical Director. "The opening of the Sanford Spine Center is the culmination of over two years of effort to create a comprehensive spine program that brings together a variety of specialists with the latest technology and services."
At the Sanford Spine Center, each patient is assigned a personal nurse case manager. This person gathers medical information which helps to determine the most appropriate specialist to treat the patient’s condition. The nurse case manager also guides the patient through their treatment plan, providing education and support to the patient and their family.
The Sanford Spine Center is a collaborative project spearheaded by Sanford USD Medical Center and Sanford Clinic physicians and surgeons in conjunction with pain management and physical therapy. The program brings together specialists in neurosurgery, orthopedic spine surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatry), neurology, pain management and anesthesiology. This multidisciplinary team excels in the diagnosis and treatment of spine disorders, including herniated discs, "sciatica", degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, chiari malformation and spinal tumors.
The Sanford Spine Center also integrates spine research, clinical practice, and education with the goals of developing unique technologies and improving patient care.
"Throughout our planning process for the Center, our focus has been on improved patient satisfaction," said Dr. Boetel. "At least 80% of individuals experience a significant episode of low back pain at some point in their lives according to the North American Spine Society. Knowing this, we have developed new patient services and clinical pathways designed to simplify access to specialty care while providing a variety of treatment options based on each patient’s unique condition and individual needs."
The Sanford Spine Center is located in the NORTH Center on the Sanford USD Medical Center Campus in Sioux Falls.
