MeritCare Sports Medicine Offering Speed Strength Camps for Athletes

MeritCare Sports Medicine is offering speed strength camps for male and female high-school athletes in track and field, soccer and baseball.

MeritCare Sports Medicine is offering speed strength camps for male and female high-school athletes in track and field, soccer and baseball.

Track and field camps focus on specific power and strength training, acceleration and speed development, running/sprinting mechanics, weightlifting and endurance training. The Dartfish biomechanical analysis system the same used in the Olympics, is also part of the program. MeritCare's program has staff trained as Level II and III USA Track & Field (USATF) coaches and it follows the USATF Elite Development camp model. Camp sessions start Wednesday, Jan. 2, and end Tuesday, Feb. 22. Registration deadline for track and field camps is Friday, Dec. 14, 2007.

The sprint camp is for those competing in jumps, hurdles and sprints.
  • Boys I. Camp meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. at MeritCare Southpointe, 2400 32nd Ave. S., Fargo., and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. at Concordia's Olson Forum indoor track, corner of 8th St. S. and 12th Ave. S., Moorhead
  • Boys II. Camp meets Mondays from 7-9 p.m. at Concordia's Olson Forum and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:45 p.m. at MeritCare Southpointe
  • Girls I. Camp meets Mondays from 7-9 p.m. at Concordia's Olson Forum and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:45 p.m. at MeritCare Southpointe
  • Girls II. Camp meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. at MeritCare Southpointe and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. at Concordia's Olson Forum
  • Speed and Power Week Intensive. This camp, for boys and girls, meets Wednesday, Feb. 20, Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23, from 6-8 p.m. at MeritCare Southpointe

The endurance camp is for those competing in distances of 800 meters or more. Camp will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m and Fridays from 4-5 p.m. at MeritCare Southpointe.

Soccer camp focuses on performance evaluation, soccer specific strength training, agility training, flexibility training and weightlifting. Digital video assessments are also available. Camps start Tuesday, Jan. 15, and end Friday, March 7. Sessions will be held at MeritCare Southpointe. Registration deadline for soccer camps is Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008.

  • Advanced camp (15-18 year olds) is for physically mature athletes who have trained in the program, or similar programs, before. Camp will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. and Fridays from 5-6 p.m.
  • Intermediate camp (13-15 year olds) is for younger athletes who want to improve their athletic performance. Camp will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. and Fridays from 5-6 p.m.

Baseball speed strength camp focuses on performance evaluation, specific strength training, acceleration and speed development, and flexibility training. It also includes a digital video assessment of throwing and hitting techniques. Camps start Monday, Jan. 21, and end Friday, March 14. Sessions will be held at MeritCare Southpointe. Registration deadline for baseball camps is Monday, Jan. 7, 2008.

  • Pitcher's camp helps athletes improve their throwing mechanics with an emphasis on injury prevention. Camp will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-10 p.m. and Fridays 5-6 p.m.
  • Position Player's camp is for positional players who want to improve baseball specific strength and power training. Camp will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 p.m. and Fridays 5-6 p.m.
