MeritCare Reproductive Medicine Now Offers Donor Egg Program

MeritCare Reproductive Medicine now has a donor egg program available. Egg donation is a relatively new fertility option allowing women, whose ovaries do not produce enough healthy eggs, to become pregnant using donated eggs. Previously, the closest facilities to offer programs were in Minneapolis, Minn., and Denver, Colo.

MeritCare staff began researching the idea over two years ago; we already provide monitoring services to patients who are working with other facilities and have done compassionate egg donations (e.g. sister-to-sister).

The decision to start the program was based mainly on the fact that many patients have requested such a service. Donors need to be between 21-34 years of age, will undergo extensive psychological and medical testing, and will receive compensation. Recipients will also undergo psychological testing; 95 percent of recipients are expected to be under the age of 40. Nationally, the success rate for recipients is approximately 50 percent.
