MeritCare is the only North Dakota hospital to receive this distinction.

U.S. News has published the best hospital issue since 1990 with the same mission - to identify centers that take on and excel at tough procedures and conditions. Of 5,462 hospitals evaluated, only 3 percent are ranked. A hospital's overall performance is summed up by a score made up of three equal parts: reputation, care-related factors such as advanced services and nursing, and mortality index.

"We are proud of the fact that our urology department is among the best in the nation," said Theodore Sawchuck, M.D., urologist at MeritCare. "Our ranking is a reflection of the integrated health services at MeritCare."

The U.S. News ranking recognizes MeritCare's commitment to providing the latest advances in health care to the region and the depth of the patient services offered by the hospital. MeritCare's urology department provides the latest treatments available including laparoscopic surgery to treat kidney tumors and brachytherapy, a minimally invasive treatment for prostate cancer.

The 2007 guide to "America's Best Hospital's" appears in the July 25 issue of the national magazine, which hits newsstand Monday, July 16.
