Skin Cancer Update on Melanoma Free Public Educational Event

Dr. John Kirkwood, leading expert on melanoma, will be holding an educational session, "Skin Cancer: Update on Melanoma," on Thursday, April 26, from 7-8 p.m. at the Ramada Plaza Suites, 1635 42 St. SW, Fargo. Dr. Kirkwood is director of the melanoma center at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He is internationally known for his research in the development of melanoma therapies. Dr. Kirkwood is a member of numerous medical oncology and research societies and has co-authored more than 300 articles.

  • According to the American Cancer Society, while melanoma accounts for about 3 percent of skin cancer cases, it causes most skin cancer deaths. The number of new cases of melanoma in the United States is on the rise. In 2007, almost 60,000 new cases of melanoma are expected to be diagnosed in America. About 8,110 people will die of the disease.
