MeritCare Doctor Trapped in Lebanon Safe Senator Kent Conrad Leads the Effort

Earlier this month, Dr. Nicolas Zouain, a radiation oncologist with the MeritCare Roger Maris Cancer, was traveling in his home country of Lebanon. Days after his arrival, Zouain let MeritCare staff know that he was trapped in Lebanon. Currently, Zouain is practicing at MeritCare on a visa waiver and is a permanent resident of Canada. A call was made to Senator Kent Conrad; the senator and his staff immediately began working to secure safe passage for Zouain out of harm's way. They negotiated with the defense department, the U.S. State Department, and ultimately, the consulates of other nations, including Canada and Norway, that have been evacuating people from combat zones in Lebanon.

This afternoon, MeritCare learned that Zouain was succesfully evacuated from Lebanon. With the help of Conrad's office, he boarded a U.S.-operated ship from Beirut to Cyprus and then flew to the United States. He is expected back in Fargo tomorrow.
Dr. Roger Gilbertson, MeritCare president/CEO says, "Dr. Zouain is a valued member of our medical staff. He has touched the lives of many patients and their families in the region. We are very thankful to Senator Conrad and his team and are extremely grateful that Dr. Zouain is returning home to Fargo."
