Dr. Maria Bell, gynecologic oncologist with Sioux Valley Clinic-OBGYN, Ltd., was recently given a Community Service Award by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for her work on South Dakota’s Indian Reservations. The Community Service Award is given annual basis to Fellows who are actively involved in a community program, which helps underserved or poorly served patient populations. Dr. Bell was recently given the Community Service Award by the ACOG for District VI.

Dr. Bell is an asset to women’s health care on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Dr. Bell developed a free clinic on the Rosebud Reservation and routinely leaves her practice and drives to the clinic site where she performs history and physical examinations, as well as pap smears and colposcopies when needed. This is all done at a free clinic. Dr. Bell also frequently makes house calls and hospice visits to her oncology patients. In addition, she has been very involved in the South Dakota women’s Cancer Network.

Members of the ACOG nominated Dr. Bell because of "her selfless dedication to the health care of women." Dr. Bell was given the Community Service Award in May at the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting in Washington, DC.
