Habitat for Humanity and Sioux Valley Partner to Help Community

Families in the Sioux Falls area have a unique opportunity to purchase items to complete or renovate their homes.

Families in the Sioux Falls area have a unique opportunity to purchase items to complete or renovate their homes. It's the Habitat ReStore, located in Sioux Falls' Industrial Park, where donated building products and appliances are sold to the general public at bargain prices or used to help build Habitat homes.

This is made especially possible through a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls and Sioux Valley Hospital USD Medical Center.

The partnership helps save our environment, provides usable building products to the general public, and generates funds to support Habitat's mission to provide affordable housing in our community, which is the mission of the ReStore.

In its quest for excellence, Sioux Valley Hospital continues to expand and acquire more land to facilitate new and vital health care services in our community. Habitat has been invited to participate in this partnership; before homes are demolished, Habitat has been given the opportunity to glean usable building materials and appliances — doors, windows, cabinets, sinks, countertops, stoves, refrigerators, mirrors, garage doors, and more for its use after homeowners in the immediate neighborhood have sold their homes to the Hospital.

This arrangement is both innovative and equitable. In the first phase of this partnership, seven volunteers, under the direction of Habitat Deconstruction Supervisor Harlan Schmidt, a long-time volunteer and leader, gleaned usable materials for use or resale that have generated $10,000 in revenue for Habitat.

We will undergo the next phase in May, when the Hospital will again invite us to partner. We thank Sioux Valley Hospital and the caring Habitat volunteers for all they do to support of our housing ministry.
