MeritCare Partners With LifeSource for Workplace Partnership for Life

Each year, more than 25,000 lives are saved by an organ transplant because of the generous gift of donation. A transplant provides recipients the chance to return to school or work, watch their children grow, and enjoy life's special moments. As we celebrate these gifts of life we are constantly reminded that we must do more to help those in need.

Currently, more than 90,000 men, women and children in the United States are in need of a life-saving transplant. In the LifeSource region of Minnesota, North and South Dakota and portions of western Wisconsin, that number is more than 2,300. Sadly, each day 17 people die because an organ is not available while 100 more people are added to the transplant waiting list.

Donation and transplantation is one aspect of health care that cannot succeed unless individuals take action and say "yes" to extending the gift of life. Those in need will not be helped without the generosity of individuals. Every individual is encouraged to make their wishes known by talking about donation with their family and adding donor to their driver's license. In Minnesota, like many other states, the driver's license designation is legal authorization for donation.

Donation is a tremendous legacy that provides grieving families with great comfort in knowing that their loved one was able to help others in need.

As part of our commitment to a healthy community, MeritCare is participating in Wear Life, Share Life – a campaign developed by LifeSource to promote organ and tissue donation awareness under the Workplace Partnership for Life. On January 24, a representative from LifeSource will be with us to celebrate Donate Life Day, and employees who are residents of Minnesota will have the opportunity to add donor designation to their licenses at no charge, employees who are North Dakota residents will be able to fill out donor cards. In exchange, employees will receive a trendy green "DONATE LIFE" bracelet to wear as an outward symbol of their commitment to share life. Employees who can prove that they already have donor designation on their license or a donor card will also receive a bracelet.

Every day, lives are saved because of individuals like each one of us who say yes to donation. One donor has the potential to save or enhance the lives of up to 60 people through organ and tissue donation. We have the power to save lives!
