Planning a Healthy Pregnancy
Healthy Moms Have Healthy Babies. Taking the following steps prior to and during pregnancy can help ensure a healthy baby.

|
Consider genetic testing if you or your husband have a family history of genetic disorders; if you are 35 or older; or if your husband is 60 or older. |
Take measures to control and/or treat all existing medical conditions. Ask your healthcare provider how it may affect your pregnancy. |
Consult your healthcare provider before taking any medications. |
Start prenatal vitamins or a multi-vitamin with folic acid if you're considering pregnancy in the next year. Folic acid has been shown to help prevent certain birth defects. |
Avoid alcohol, nicotine and illicit drugs and limit your caffeine intake each day. |
Exercise in moderation, three times a week with your healthcare provider's okay. Some activities considered safe during pregnancy are walking, golf, swimming, bicycling and low impact aerobics. |
Practice relaxation and other stress control techniques. Healthcare providers think emotional stress may constrict the blood supply to the uterus and placenta - the baby's sole source of oxygen and nutrients. |
