Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy

Among cancers affecting both men and women, colorectal cancer - cancer of the colon or rectum - is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with advancing age. More than 90% of the cases occur in people aged 50 or older, yet a significant number of people still do not get screened. Sanford Health's professional staff makes every step of the process as comfortable as possible.

A colonoscopy is recommended starting at age 50 for those of average risk. Patients with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps should contact their physicians as they may need to be screened at a younger age, and have follow-up exams at more frequent intervals.

Call Sanford Chamberlain at 605-234-6551 to schedule your screening today.

Lung Screen

Lung Screen

Sanford Chamberlain offers a lung screening service using low-dose CT technology to detect if patients have forms of lung diseases, including lung cancer.

Lung cancer is often caught too late to provide the care needed, but this new lung screening service will allow for early detection. Research in a national lung cancer screening trial proved that screening for lung cancer through low-dose CT can reduce the risk of lung cancer related death by 20 percent.

Physicians will use a CT scan, a type of X-ray used to look in detail at specific parts of the body, to detect lung diseases. The CT scan will use very little radiation, resulting in minimal negative effects on the body.

The screenings, which last about 15 minutes, are offered at Sanford Chamberlain.

Those eligible for the screening include adults age 50 to 74 who are currently smokers or former smokers who have quit within the past 15 years. Other criteria may apply, and patients should call for more information.

Mammography

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In the fight against breast cancer, early detection is key. Digital mammography is aiding physicians in detecting breast cancer earlier and that technology is now available at Sanford Chamberlain Medical Center.
