Gastric Bypass Surgery – A Cure for Type II Diabetes?

If you’re diabetic, you understand how the disease impacts your life and your family – you have to watch what you eat, when you eat, when you take your insulin, your activity levels. Losing weight can be difficult. But for diabetic patients who are obese, doctors have discovered that gastric bypass surgery can be an effective treatment for Type II diabetes and obesity.

How does it work?

Gastric bypass surgery reduces the size of your stomach and shortens the intestines – so you can’t eat as much. But is also seems to have an effect on normalizing blood sugar. Patients are leaving the hospital without diabetes or the need to take insulin. “The fast effectiveness is due to, we think, an elaboration of hormones made by the intestines. These are called incretins and these are dramatically increased after surgery in hours or days,” Dr. Phil Schauer, director of the Cleveland Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute told ABC News Health in a report they published on March 28, 2011.

“These hormones stimulate the pancreas to make more insulin. And that’s thought to be the underlying problem with Type II diabetes,” Schauer told ABC News.

The International Diabetes Federation has formally recommended that gastric bypass surgery be considered as an appropriate treatment for people with Type II diabetes who have a BMI of 35 or more and who have not been able to control their diabetes effectively with traditional weight loss, medication or other lifestyle factors.
