Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that often begins in childhood and can cause pain, poor body posture and health complications. Postural Restoration is a newer technique that is being studied for its ability to effectively manage and treat scoliosis. At this time, there are no clinical studies or post-treatment research to support its use; however, Sanford PRI-trained physical therapists are using this technique and are encouraged by the results patients are reporting.

Please talk to your Sanford physician or physical therapist to learn more about how this treatment may be a choice for you. Below, is an article, used with permission, from PRI regarding their findings on Scoliosis:

Postural Restoration techniques provide a conservative approach to the management of scoliosis. While techniques may not correct a spinal curve, significant gains can be made from reducing torsion and correcting mechanics of the rib cage.

Clinical experience of postural restoration trained therapists provides specific clinical data to support the use of Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) techniques as much as if not more so than other approaches to physical therapy.

Ideally, postural restoration techniques would be initiated on curves between 0-25 degrees and on patients between the ages of 7-15 years of age.

Treatment can effectively stop a curve from progressing and possibly reverse curvature when patient and parent compliance and understanding are at high levels. Another component of successful intervention requires a thorough understanding and implementation of integration techniques by both the therapist and patient. Early intervention is best! Adolescent curvature and rotational curvature is more difficult to manage after the age of 17.

Curves between 25-40 degrees may need to managed through the use of body jackets. Postural Restoration exercises can be utilized in conjunction with the use of the body jacket to maximize treatment success.
