What is Parkinson’s disease (PD)?
The disease affects both men and women. It is most common in those over age 50. Recently there has been an increase in the number of patients in their 30’s and 40’s – and some even younger – who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Standard treatment for the disease has been drug therapy. In addition, specialized rehabilitative therapies have also been shown to improve symptoms in some patients and to maximize safety, mobility, communication and self-care independence.
What are the sign and symptoms of PD?
The loss of dopamine production in the brain causes the primary symptoms of PD. The key signs of PD are:
• Tremor (shaking)
• Slowness of movement
• Rigidity (stiffness)
• Difficulty with balance Other signs of PD may include
• Small, cramped handwriting
• Stiff facial expression
• Shuffling walk
• Muffled speech
• Depression
What is a Support Group?
Sanford USD Medical Center offers a FREE support group for those with Parkinson’s disease, their caregivers, family, friends and the community. The support group provides an opportunity to share concerns, gather information about new developments and treatments, and socialization opportunities. The support group is open to anyone, regardless of hospital or clinic affiliation. There is no cost to attend. Please call 605- 328-4227 for more information.
WHEN: Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. with the exception of August and December.
WHERE: Sanford Wellness Center, 4201 South Oxbow, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Classrooms A and B.
IN ADDITION: Evening meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm, with the exception of December.

Though there is no cost for support group attendance, membership in the Parkinson Association of South Dakota is encouraged.
