YOU deserve a new beginning! Is Surgery for You? Bariatric surgery may be the next step for people who remain severely obese after trying nonsurgical approaches, or for people who have an obesity-related disease. Weight-loss surgery alters the body's digestive process by limiting the amount of food the stomach can hold and/or by limiting the absorption of nutrients. For those patients who meet carefully defined criteria, weight loss surgery may be recommended.
You may be a candidate for surgery if you have:
|
• |
A body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more or about 100 pounds over estimated ideal body weight. |
|
|
• |
A BMI between 35 and 39.9 and a serious obesity-related health problem such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint pain, etc. |
|
|
• |
An understanding of the operation and the lifestyle changes you will need to make. |
| The option of surgical treatment would be offered to patients who meet surgical criteria, are well informed, motivated and have acceptable operative risks. Each patient should commit to participate in treatment and long-term follow-up. Patients considering weight loss surgery must clearly and realistically understand how their lives will change after the operation. Furthermore, patients must make a commitment to participate in a lifestyle focused on health, nutrition, exercise, and long-term healthy living.

Surgical Options Choice of surgery depends upon individual's needs and goals. Surgery is a tool to help individuals lose weight and make a lifestyle change.
Two types of surgeries are performed at Sanford Clinic - Surgical Associates by Dr. Dennis Glatt, Dr. Donald Graham and Dr. Peter O'Brien.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band The adjustable gastric banding procedure restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold by placing an inflatable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The new smaller upper stomach limits the amount of food that can be consumed at one time, and the narrowed outlet increases the time it takes for the stomach to empty. This reduction results in reduced food intake and weight loss. |

Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass-Open/Laparoscopic The Roux-En-Y gastric bypass restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold and reduces the number of calories absorbed by altering the digestive track. A small stomach pouch is created to restrict food intake. A Y-shaped section of small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the lower stomach. This reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs resulting in weight loss. |

| Bariatric Surgery Support GroupAnyone is invited to attend the monthly support group meetings held at Sanford USD Medical Center where topics such as exercise, nutrition, and portion control are discussed. Many patients find the support group assists them in dealing with challenges that may occur as their life and health change. These meetings are attended by family, friends, old and new patients, or anyone investigating the surgery. The physicians highly recommend that you attend a meeting prior to weight-loss surgery. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Schroeder Auditorium. Call our bariatric coordinator at 605-333-2249 for more information. Where is the Clinic located?

Is there any paperwork that I can complete prior to my first appointment? Yes. Please print out and complete the forms prior to your first appointment.
