

Are you worried that your child is, or may become, overweight?In December 2004 Sanford Childrens Specialty Clinic developed a pediatric weight management multidisciplinary team to evaluate and treat childhood obesity. This clinic is a family-based, behavioral and educational program designed to promote healthy eating and exercise habits for overweight children and their families. The pediatric weight management clinic provides a multidisciplinary team approach to treatment. The team is comprised of a physician team leader, Dr. James Wallace, a nurse coordinator, dieticians, fitness trainers and a social worker.The program includes:
The pediatric weight management program focus on small changes and achievable results. The dietician, fitness trainer, physician and patient agree upon goals. Patients leave the appointments with a binder of information on food and activities, journal pages, and a one page plan that is cosigned by the patient/parent and the nurse. The patient is encouraged to journal food intake, activity and emotions every day. The journal is discussed at follow up appointments and a new goal sheet is made at each new appointment.
