Whatever your time, talents or interest, there are MANY volunteer opportunities at Sanford USD Medical Center. 

Admissions Escort (Noon - 4pm shifts available at this time.)

(Mon-Fri varied shifts from 8am-7pm)
To provide patients waiting in the admissions area with a warm welcome. To escort patients to test areas or patient rooms.

Birth Place Greeter

(Monday-Sunday varied shifts from 8am – 4pm)
To greet patients as they arrive at the Birth Place. Answer phones, answer call lights, deliver flower to patient rooms, accompanying patients to the NICU, passing waters or meal trays, walking patients/belongings on discharge, tear down/sticker charts, stocking rooms, and faxing documents to physician offices and Patient Appointment Center.

Blood Bank

(Mon, Wed, Fri varied shifts from 1-5pm)
To assist the Blood Bank in obtaining blood donation commitments.

Child Care Aide

(Mon-Sun varied shifts)
To meet the needs of parents who utilize the Wellness Center by providing child care services or summer recreational activities in the playroom area or adjacent outside areas. Volunteers will be used to assist hired staff.

Clerical/Aids

(Mon-Fri varied shifts from 8am-4pm)
To provide hospital departments and offices with clerical support.

DVD Cart – Sanford Children’s Hospital (No openings available at this time.)

Responsible for the delivery of videos to patient rooms and the check in/check out process of the videos. May also assist in washing toys in the playroom.

Escort Surgical Tower (6am - 2pm shifts available at this time.)

(Mon-Fri varied shifts from 6am-6pm)
Volunteers escort patient's families from surgical tower to patient rooms. To provide housekeeping, clerical, messenger and transport support as needed.

G.I. Aide Volunteer (No openings available at this time.)

(Mon-Fri varied shifts from 9am-Noon)
To provide support services to staff in the G.I. section.

Gift Shop

Gift shop volunteers will primarily wait on customers in the gift shop, operate cash register, answer phone, take messages, telephone orders for flowers and gift items, and may, on occasion, deliver flowers to patient rooms.

Magazines (No openings available at this time.)

(Mon-Fri varied shifts from 8am-4pm)
To distribute magazines to waiting rooms and lounges.

Mail (No openings available at this time.)

(Mon-Fri 8:30am-11am)
To assist with the accurate and timely delivery of patient mail and to assist patients in the opening and reading of their mail.

Nursing Unit Volunteer (9am - 1pm shifts available at this time.)

(Mon-Sun varied shifts from 8am-8pm)
To provide support services to older adult patients by visiting/reminiscing with patient, assisting with diversional activities such as reading to patients, crossword puzzles and games, offering lotions and gentle hand massage. May also assist staff with stocking supplies.

Please note that individuals should meet the following qualifications to be considered as a Nursing Unit volunteer: 

  • Extroverted, mature, positive service-oriented individuals
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Self-initiating and autonomous
  • Physical ability to withstand periods of walking, standing and pushing a wheelchair
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in English; bilingual skill are helpful
  • Mental ability to provide emotional support to patients
  • Ability to take the initiative and be flexible in assuming differing roles as needed 
Patient Escort – Sanford Children’s Hospital (No openings available at this time.)

(Mon-Sun varied shifts from 8am-8pm)
To provide patients entering the Children’s Hospital with a warm welcome and to escort patients from the registration area to other locations within the hospital. Also be available to provide information, support and comfort to patients and their families/visitors. May also provide clerical assistance, housekeeping, messenger, deliveries, transport, and operate spectralink phone as needed.

Pediatric Companion Program (1 - 4pm shifts available at this time.) 

(Mon-Sun shifts from 9am-1pm, 1-4pm or 4-8pm)
To provide support services to children ages 0 – 15 years of age in the Children’s Hospital by providing activities such as reading or playing games, rocking babies or being present with a child for companion reasons. Will also assist staff with stocking supplies. Please note that you must be 19 years of age to volunteer in this area.

Pediatric Playroom - Sanford Children's Hospital (New postion with shifts available.)

(Mon-Sun varied shifts from 9am-1pm or 2-5pm)
To assist pediatrics staff in creating a positive experience for hospitalized children by being present in the Playroom. Assisting in craft projects, washing toys, helping children pick out toys and monitoring playtime. Please note that you must be 19 years of age to volunteer in this area.

Pet Therapy (No openings available at this time.)

(Mon-Fri varied shifts)
This program utilize animals affiliated with the Animal Assisted Therapy program as a therapeutic modality to enhance emotional, physical, cognitive and social function of hospitalized patients on the cardiology unit. You must have a licensed therapy pet.

Pharmacy Aide (Morning shifts available at this time.)

(Mon-Sun varied shifts from 8am-8pm)
To provide support services to the Pharmacy Department.

Printing and Graphics (No openings available at this time.)

(Mon-Fri varied shifts from 8am-4pm)
Volunteers assist in processing bulk and regular print jobs; collate projects, laminating, stapling and folding, and other clerical duties.

Trauma 5 Volunteer

(Monday through Friday, 5-10 pm or Weekends 1-5 pm and 5-10 pm )
To enhance the Trauma Five’s healthcare team in providing non-medical information, support and comfort to patients and their families/visitors. To round and visit patients and families while they are waiting for test results or to be seen by healthcare team. To provide housekeeping, clerical, messenger and transport support as needed. Assist in restocking supplies.

Please note that you must be 19 years of age to volunteer in this area and individuals should meet the following qualifications to be considered as a Trauma 5 volunteer:

  • Extroverted, mature, positive service-oriented individuals
  • Physical ability to withstand periods of walking, standing and pushing a wheelchair
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in English; bilingual skill are helpful
  • Mental ability to provide emotional support to families in crisis
  • Ability to take the initiative and be flexible in assuming differing roles as needed
Waiting Room Host/Hostess (Daytime shifts available at this time.)

(Mon-Sun varied shifts)
To provide support services in waiting room. To answer phones, make coffee, direct visitors to cafeteria, restroom etc.

Wayfinder/Lobby Greeter

(Mon – Sun varied shifts from 7am-7pm)
Volunteers enhance the Lobby in providing information, support and comfort to patients and their families/visitors. They provide housekeeping, are clerical messengers and transport support as needed. The Sanford USD Medical Center Campus covers a 6X4 block area. Many customers need assistance in finding a physicians office, patient room, outpatient testing area, cafeteria and many other areas. The Way Finding Volunteer opportunity was created to help our customers get to the area in which they are looking for. We are looking for individuals who are outgoing, friendly and can be on their feet for 4 hours and walk 2 to 6 miles during that 4 hour period.
