Gear Up For a Healthier TomorrowAttention to health and wellness is an important part of a man’s life. But, because of pressing demands and busy lives, it's an easy thing to put off. That’s why Sanford Clinic has created a Men's Health program, a tool kit of sorts that will help men stay healthy and active. The Men's Health check-up will take approximately a half-hour and the medical provider will talk about conditions that can affect a man because of his age or because of his medical background. Your AppointmentThere are certain medical conditions that men are most at risk for because of age or medical history. During the Men’s Health check-up, the provider will determine which conditions the patient should be tested for. Heart and Blood PressureChecking a patient’s blood pressure is kinda like checking the pressure in the tires of a car. High Blood Pressure, also called hypertension, is a risk factor for heart and kidney diseases and stroke. High blood pressure is especially dangerous because it often gives no warning signs or symptoms. Too much pressure and the patient could blow a valve stem. TestosteroneLow testosterone affects an estimated 13 million men in the U.S. Symptoms of low testosterone in men include decreased libido, loss of body and facial hair, weakened bones, increased body fat, and feeling run down. A simple blood test will help the medical provider identify if the patient’s levels are low. ImmunizationsThink shots are only for tots? Think again. It’s much easier and more cost-effective to prevent a disease rather than treat it. Some vaccines need to be given only once; others require updates or “boosters” to maintain successful immunization and continued protection against disease. The medical provider will ask the patient a series of questions to ensure the patient is up to snuff on all shots. CholesterolNeed a good valve cleaner? Too much cholesterol in a person’s body means an increased risk of getting cardiovascular diseases which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. If a patient has too much, the cholesterol can build up on the walls of the arteries that carry blood to the heart. This buildup, which occurs over time, causes less blood and oxygen to get to the heart. This can cause chest pain and heart attacks. DiabetesMost of us have hit a finger with a hammer at least once. Hurt—didn't it?! So a little prick of a finger shouldn't concern you the least bit. The medical provider will perform a blood glucose test to determine if the patient is at risk for developing diabetes, a disease that occurs when the body cannot regulate blood sugars. Body Mass IndexEstimating Body Mass Index is like checking over a car’s chassis. By measuring a patient’s BMI, the medical provider can find out if the patient is at risk of developing some diseases, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke, and some cancers. Other items the medical provider may talk with the patient about include:
