Specializing in surgical procedures for the treatment of acquired disorders of the heart. (Adult and Pediatric)
Coronary Artery Disease(CAD) - A chronic disease in which the coronary arteries are hardened and narrowed (atheroschlerosis). The coronary arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart. When they are diseased, the heart is at risk of not receiving the oxygen-rich blood that it needs in order to function.
Treatment - Balloon angioplasty (with or without stenting) - A balloon at the tip of a catheter is briefly inflated, which presses plaque back against the wall of the artery and make more room for the blood to flow. A wire mesh metal tube or stent may be inserted through the catheter, where it expands to hold open the artery.
Acquired Heart Disease
Treatment - Bypass heart surgery - A conronary artery bypass graft is a surgical treatment for coronary artery disease. During the bypass a surgeon takes a segment of a healthy blood vessel (either an artery or vein) from another part of the body, and uses it to create a detour or bypass around the blocked portion of the coronary artery. As a result, oxygen-rich blood can flow more freely to nourish the heart muscle. A patient may undergo one, two, three or more bypasses depending on how many coronary arteries (and their main branches) are blocked.
Valvular Heart Disease - Any dysfunction or abnormality of one or more of the hearts four valves, including the mitral valve and aortic valve on the left side, and the tricuspid valve and pulmonic valve on the right side. The four valves (flaps made of tissue) keep blood flowing in one direction and only at the right time. They act as gates that swing open to allow blood to flow through and then tightly shut until the next cycle begins.
Treatment - Heart valve repair or replacement - This is an open-heart surgery in which a biological or mechanical valve is used to replace a defective heart valve.
Congenital Heart Disease - A heart-related problem that is present since birth and often as the heart is forming even before birth. It involves one or more defects in the heart, the hearts valves, the veins leading to the heart, the arteries leaving the heart or the connections among these various parts of the body. There are many different types of congenital heart disease.
Treatment - Catheter-based procedures or surgery - A procedure that uses a long, thin hollow tube that is inserted by a physician into a large blood vessel and fed to a target area. This allows the physician to perform sophisticated, minimally invasive tests and procedures.
