SCAN

Screening for Child Abuse & Neglect (SCAN)

SCAN is an interdisciplinary team that meets weekly in-house for case review. The SCAN team consists of:
  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Social Workers
  • Representatives from the State's Attorney's Office
  • Police Department Officials
  • Sheriff's Department Officials


Child Protection Services Personnel
Any healthcare professionals may make a referral to the SCAN team. Cases are presented and reviewed at weekly SCAN meetings. If a case is urgent or if a child is in imminent danger, the case can be reviewed immediately. The SCAN team contacts Child Protective Services and/or law enforcement and provides them with a comprehensive evaluation. 92 SCAN cases were evaluated in 2000.


Examples of SCAN referrals may include:
  • # Fractures in Children Under One Year of Age
  • Excessive Bleeding in a Child with no Clear History
  • Skull Fractures in Children Under Two Years of Age
  • Burns on Children Not Yet Walking
  • Cigarette or Immersion Burns on Children of Any Age
  • Extensive Bruising
  • Sexual Assault to any Child Under the Age of 18 (Including STDs or any disclosure from a Child Under 18)
  • Repeated Poisonings Requiring Treatment
  • Repeated Serious Injuries Requiring Treatment
  • Failure to Thrive that is not Due to Organic Reasons
  • Multiple Traumas
  • Any Concern or Question about How or When to Report to Child Protective Services
  • Outside Agencies or Jurisdictions Requesting Consultation
