Medical Foster Care

South Dakota's Department of Social Services identified a need for medical assessments for foster children in Minnehaha County. Child's Voice was then identified as having the facility and staff to best meet that need. In December of 2002, Child's Voice staff began providing medical assessments for area foster children.

The purpose of the foster care clinic is to:
  • provide comprehensive, high quality health screenings to children entering the foster care system.

  • Coordinate health care services for children in foster care, including making appropriate referrals.

  • Review past healthcare data and information, as it is available.

  • Provide comprehensive development screening assessments to children entering foster care.

  • Provide mental health screenings for children over the age of four entering the foster care system.

  • Complete nutrition/dietary screening for infants and children.

  • Coordinate and share information with the child's primary long term health care provider, schools and counselors, to better serve the medical, mental health and nutritional needs of each child entering foster care and thereafter.
