Sanford Employs Only Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics in South Dakota

(Sioux Falls, SD) — Lisa Esposito, MS, RD, CSSD, LN recently became a credentialed Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). Esposito works for the National Institute for Athletic Health & Performance (NIAHP) at Sanford USD Medical Center. Currently, there are only 339 CSSD's in the nation and Sanford employs the only CSSD in South Dakota.

In order to earn the CSSD credential, Esposito had to complete more than 1,500 hours of experience in sports nutrition and pass a national examination. Esposito is responsible for resting energy expenditure (REE), body composition and nutrition consults at the NIAHP, while also assisting with exercise testing such as aerobic capacity, anaerobic threshold, heat tolerance and sweat-electrolyte testing.

"Lisa plays an integral role in developing and conducting new research initiatives and working one-on-one with athletes and other active people to address health challenges during exercise and sport," said Michael F. Bergeron, PhD, Director, NIAHP. "We are proud of her latest accomplishment."

Esposito earned a bachelor's degree in foods, nutrition and dietetics from Bradley University, a U.S. regionally accredited university. She also completed a supervised practice program (internship) approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association prior to passing a national registration exam and receiving a master's degree in exercise science from the University of Houston.

Esposito is a Registered Dietitian with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the American Dietetic Association, is a Licensed Nutritionist by the state of South Dakota and most recently became a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) conferred by the CDR after passing a national examination.

The Sports Dietitian provides individual and group/team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of competitive and recreational athletes, on-site and during travel. Primary responsibilities include counseling individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services, serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, trainers, and parents; providing sports nutrition education for health/wellness programs, athletic teams, and community groups; and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice.
