Sanford Cancer in Sioux Falls is one of 21 selected NCI Community Cancer Center Program sites.
(Sioux Falls, SD) - The National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, selected Sanford Cancer in Sioux Falls to continue participation in its national network of community cancer centers through the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCC). A member of the (NCCCP) since its inception in 2007, Sanford was awarded $939,590 to fund participation in the NCCCP network for the program’s next two years. Sanford Cancer is one of only 21 Community Cancer Centers selected to help lead the rapid delivery of the latest evidence-based care and research to the region and nation.
“As a NCCCP partner site, we are focused on providing advanced, state-of-the-art, research-based cancer care closer to home and unlocking access to care for disparate population groups, especially Native Americans and those in rural and frontier communities,” said Charles O’Brien, MD, president, Sanford USD Medical Center.
Sanford oncologist Michael Keppen, MD agrees, “Equally important is that Sanford Cancer maintains a focus on the emotional, social and spiritual needs of cancer patients and their families in its pursuit of delivering more personalized care.”
Launched in 2007 as a pilot program comprised of 16 community hospitals, the NCCCP added 14 additional sites to the network in 2010. Funding available from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allowed the 30 NCCCP hospitals to recently compete for a program extension; 21 of them were awarded funds to continue program participation. Sanford Cancer Center’s selection ensures that the NCCCP network’s ongoing efforts to offer state-of-the-art coordinated care and to create research opportunities will continue to be addressed in our community.
There are three main benefits to an affiliation with the National Cancer Institute and participation in the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP):
• ACCESS: Greater degree of access to the resources and people of the National Cancer Institute as well as access to other community cancer centers and the work each is doing to improve cancer care and treatment. The access transforms into greater access for our patients to state of the art treatments, multiple modalities, clinical trials and improved care.
• RESEARCH: The NCCCP is a road map for guiding and improving the already exceptional cancer services and directing a critical focus on the rapid delivery of evidence-based care and research. Through strategic communications, patients will come to understand how a strong research infrastructure translates into better medicine and more personalized care.
• ASSOCIATION: As a selected site, Sanford Cancer has the opportunity and obligation to leverage the partnership with the National Cancer Institute as well as the affiliation with the other 20 selected sites. For patients and caregivers this should provide: 1) Greater peace of mind; 2) Comfort in selecting Sanford as their Cancer Center of choice; 3) Understanding we have the resources to fight and win against cancer.
Sanford Cancer instituted and continues to expand a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care by adding nurse navigators, physicians, services, technology and facilities annually. The level of care experienced by patients at Sanford Cancer remains unmatched by any cancer program in the region.
About the NCCCP:
The NCCCP is a collaborative network of community hospitals working to: expand cancer research, enhance access to cancer care, and improve the quality of care for cancer patients served by community hospitals in urban, suburban and rural areas, with an emphasis on underserved populations. The majority of U.S. cancer patients are diagnosed with and treated for the disease in their local communities, where they can remain closer to home rather than commute to major academic medical centers. The NCCCP network has served approximately 53,000 new cancer cases each year.
