New Kid-Friendly Cast Removal Tool Now at Sanford

Sanford Children’s Bone Clinic Adds Quiet Cast Removal System

(Sioux Falls) — After more than 20 years with very little innovation, the world of cast removal has changed.  Sanford Children's Bone Clinic proudly unveiled today a new tool for cast removal.

With an operating sound level just above a whisper, and no vibration, the Quiet Cast Removal System alleviates anxiety due to noise and results in a much more pleasant experience to the child, parent and caregiver. The machine, which is the size of a large drill and battery-operated, actually propels itself along the cast as it slices the plaster and underlying gauze. It includes a cutting keel which prevents the patient's skin from coming in contact with the cutting blade while also cutting through the cast's protective padding.

"Cast removal can be extremely stressful on a child and family, even though the outcome is going to be good," said Geoffrey Haft, MD, Sanford Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. "Our previous tools were safe, but were very intimidating because of the loud drill-like sound and oscillating teeth of the saw. The new Quiet Cast Removal System sounds more like a hairdryer, and there’s no dust, no noise, no cutting or the potential of burning your patients."

A grant from Children's Miracle Network allowed Sanford Children's Bone Clinic to purchase the Quiet Cast Removal system.
