Michael F. Bergeron, PhD Chosen to Receive UCONN Alumni Award


Michael F. Bergeron, PhD has been selected to receive the prestigious Outstanding Kinesiology Professional Award from the Neag School of Education Alumni Society of the University of Connecticut.

(Storrs, CT) Michael F. Bergeron, PhD has been selected to receive the prestigious Outstanding Kinesiology Professional Award from the Neag School of Education Alumni Society of the University of Connecticut. Dr. Bergeron is currently the Director for the National Institute for Athletic Health and Performance and Center for Youth Sports and Health at Sanford and a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

Dr. Bergeron earned a M.A in 1990 and a Ph.D. in 1993 in the field of Exercise Physiology from the Neag School. He was chosen to receive this award because of his leadership in health- and policy-oriented research and education initiatives at the Sanford USD Medical Center, the Medical College of Georgia, and with recognized organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Dr. Bergeron is a Fellow and Trustee of the American College of Sports Medicine, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Executive Committee for the Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness, and currently serves as an Editorial Board member for the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Journal of Athletic Training. He has numerous publications and has presented his research around the world, and his work as a prominent researcher is highly praised by colleagues in his field. His research includes studies on exercise, performance, and fitness with youth and adults, with an emphasis on the effects of exercise in the heat on fluid and mineral balance, as well as thermal and cardiovascular strain. He has also studied the effects of exercise and heat stress on erythrocyte sickling and inflammation in people with sickle cell trait. 

In 2005, Dr. Bergeron received the Faculty Research Award from the Medical College of Georgia School of Allied Health Sciences. He also received the International Young Scientist Award in 1996 from the American College of Sports Medicine. He is active with numerous sport governing bodies and organizations and has worked as a Boston Marathon Medical Volunteer and as a Special Olympics Tennis Coach.

Dr. Bergeron will be recognized at the Eleventh Annual Awards Dinner of the Neag School of Education on Saturday, May 16, 2009.
