Sanford Children’s Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – Sioux Falls
Sanford Children’s Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located at the USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. We offer the region’s only Level III care for more than 700 babies per year from across the Midwest born with life-threatening conditions. A neonatologist is on-site 24/7 and we are staffed by experienced neonatal and perinatal specialists, neonatal respiratory specialists, neonatal nurses and support staff. We have 23 advanced practice nurses that specialize in neonatology and our NICU nurses have an average of fifteen years experience in this specialty.
Legacy of Pioneering Neonatal Care
We opened the first NICU in the region in 1971 and are proud to have redesigned the Boekelheide NICU in 2006 to take advantage of leading studies that show that the sickest of infants heal faster and have better outcomes in quieter, lower lit environments. Studies also show that babies do better when they have more direct care from parents.
Advanced Level of Equipment and features of our NICU include:
- 45 private family suites; 58 beds including 36 Giraffe® OmniBeds® which provide a temperature controlled environment for infants
- Indirect Lighting
- Noise Minimizing Alarms
- Family Welcome Area
- Web-cam Access
The Boekelheide NICU was made possible by the dreams and commitment of physicians, caregivers and patients who inspired the design and features of the NICU. The Boekelheide Family and Mr. Denny Sanford generously donated the funding to complete the project.
Family-Centered Care is Important for Your Baby
We recognize the important role that family plays in a baby's health and healing. That's why in our NICU, our team encourages mothers, fathers and other family members to participate in their baby's care.
Studies show that family-focused care results in shorter hospital stays and better long-term outcomes. We encourage parents to participate in their baby's care, at every stage. This is one reason why visiting hours do not apply to parents; we consider them a part of our care team. Parents are allowed to stay with their baby as long as they want and may come and go as they please.
If there is a known risk that a baby will be born needing care in a neonatal intensive care unit, Perinatologists at Sanford USD Medical Center work closely with Boekelheide NICU Neonatologists to begin planning for that care before the baby is born. We also work closely with referring Perinatologists and OB/GYN specialists to coordinate and plan for care.
In the event that a mother and/or newborn baby need to travel to receive care at Sanford USD Medical Center or the Boekelheide NICU at Sanford Children’s Hospital, our Maternal-Neonatal Transport Team is ready to respond to calls 24/7.
