Youth Heart Screen
The Youth Heart Screen is a series of non-invasive tests that evaluate the heart health of children and young adults 12-24 years of age. The Youth Heart Screen is a sophisticated way to determine the heart health of youth. If heart abnormalities are detected early, they can often be corrected. The screening tests are completely painless and take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
What Can You Do Today?
Start with making an appointment at the Sanford USD Medical Center’s Screening Center for a Youth heart screen. We’ll screen for risk factors and assess your heart’s overall health.
What the screening includes:
- EKG
- Blood Pressure
- Limited Echocardiogram
- BMI
- Fasting Cholesterol Panel
What will it Cost Me?
The Screen only costs $50 ($25 if a parent has completed Sanford Heart or Vascular Screening.)
What if a problem is detected?
Approximately 3-4 weeks after the screening, the child or young adult will receive a letter stating the results of their heart screening. In the event that an abnormality is detected, you will receive a letter asking you to contact your family physician. Your physician will also receive a letter detailing what was found. Letters will be sent to your family physician for both normal and abnormal results.
Students may be advised on further diagnostic testing based on findings from the screening. If further testing and evaluation is required, you and/or your insurance will be financially responsible.

The Youth Heart Screen Program is in no way a substitute for a regular and thorough physical performed on each student by their personal physician or the team’s medical staff.
