Nurse Becky: The little things make a difference
I left the hospital and worked in a Family Practice Clinic while my children were growing up. My mother and I had lots of fun making a variety of child friendly and holiday uniforms. One afternoon while taking samples to the lab, I heard a young boy cry out, "Bob Builder, draw my blood, Bob Builder draw my blood". He had been crying and was held down by 4 adults. I was wearing a Bob The Builder scrub top. I pointed to my top. The 2 year old's eyes lit up. Yes! Yes! He said. He sat perfectly still while I drew his blood. The lab tech managed to find a Bob the Builder band-aid and stickers. The little boy proudly walked into the waiting area and announced that Bob the Builder drew his blood. The scrub top, the band-aids, and stickers were a small act of kindness.
I believe it is the little things that I can offer to my patients and make a difference.
