Nurse Sandi: I am Proud to be a Nurse

An elderly man had a cardiac arrest at home. He was in our Cardiac ICU on a vent with his prognosis bleak. His family was probably going to be taking him off life support in the morning. About 3am I walked past the family room and saw that his wife and daughter were awake. I stopped in and we talked a bit. I told them the nurse caring for him was about to start his bath, and after that we'd come to get them to sit in the room with him. The elderly wife asked excitedly if she could help with his bath. The nurse caring for him and I let the wife take the lead in delivering the bath. It was the most gentle, loving and kind expresssion of love and respect for her husband. When we finished we moved a chair next to the bed so she could hold his hand. She then asked if she could lie in bed next to him. We moved her husband to one side of the bed and there was enough room for her. We told her we wouldn't disturb them until 6:30 am when we'd have to do a few things and if she needed anything before then, to let us know. At 7am she came out of the room and gave me the biggest hug and with tears in her eyes, thanked us for letting her spend that night with her husband. She said that next to thier wedding night, this was the most wonderful time of their 50 years of marriage!
