Sanford International Clinics

History of Sanford Health and Sanford International Clinics

Sanford Health is an integrated health care organization based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fargo, North Dakota. Our not-for-profit system includes 35 hospitals, 175 clinics, and more than 1,500 employed physicians in over 75 specialized areas of medicine serving patients in eight states. With more than 25,000 employees serving millions of people annually, Sanford Health is the largest rural health care provider in the United States.

Sanford Health's vision is "to improve the human condition through exceptional care, innovation and discovery." This vision includes a global focus on the delivery of basic health services to children and families. Our expertise in the efficient, effective delivery of health care in rural areas positions Sanford Health as a pioneer in the development of a global network of primary care facilities in areas of need.

In 2007, Sanford Health launched Sanford International Clinics as an initiative to develop a series of pediatric clinics in the U.S. and around the world in areas that lack sufficient primary care services. In many developing countries, however, the most effective way to improve the health of children is by treating the entire family. To accommodate this need, Sanford International Clinics expanded its mission to include the potential for hundreds of community clinics to serve millions of people. Formed upon Sanford's century-long commitment to providing comprehensive health care in the Midwestern United States, the Sanford International Clinics represent the organization's international commitment to health and healing.

Two Models of Care

In areas of the United States and in other developed nations, Sanford serves pediatric patients by engaging a proven model of sustainable outpatient, community-specific care. Outside of our six-state primary market, Sanford's current and future Children's clinics include Duncan, Oklahoma; Oceanside, California; Klamath Falls, Oregon; and the Baja area of Mexico. In each location, Sanford partners with local medical providers, government bodies, business leaders, and community organizations to ensure our clinics meet the unique needs of the community.

In countries such as Ghana, Africa, where the most effective way to improve children's health is care for the adults in their lives, Sanford works with partner organizations to engage national health programs and develop clinic networks that provide basic, primary health care for the entire family. In these countries, Sanford seeks support for the development of networks of hub, spoke and micro clinic facilities, each of which is tailored in size and scope of services to meet the needs of the community it serves.

Unlike mission-based or mobile treatment programs, the Sanford International Clinics provide communities with permanent, sustainable health care infrastructure. Our clinics also enjoy the benefit of complete integration with both Sanford Health and Sanford Research (in areas like rare diseases, health disparities and type 1 diabetes). This integration of scientific discovery and clinical services allows physicians to provide the most advanced care available.
