Cervix

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus. It is sometimes called the neck of the uterus. The cervix has an opening called the os.

Some tests are done to check for cancer of the cervix.

  • A Pap test is done to look for changes in the cells of the cervix.
  • Colposcopy is a test that uses a lighted magnifying tool (colposcope) to look more closely at the vagina and cervix. It may be done to check areas of abnormal tissue found during a Pap test.
  • A cervical biopsy removes a sample from the cervix. The sample is then examined under a microscope. This can show whether the cells have changes that may be signs of cancer.
