Medical History for Shaken Baby Syndrome

During a medical history for shaken baby syndrome, the doctor will ask questions about the child's symptoms and general health. The doctor also usually seeks information about the family and caregivers to try to determine whether the child has been hurt and when the injuries may have occurred.

Questions about symptoms

  • What symptoms have you noticed? How long has the child had them?
  • Has the child had any fevers recently or other signs of illness?
  • Has the child had any recent injuries or falls?

Questions about family members and caregivers

  • Who has been caring for the child?
  • How do other children in the home behave toward the child?
  • Do any family members have any physical or mental health conditions?
  • What support does the caregiver have?
  • What are the caregiver's expectations about how young children should behave?

Other questions

  • Has the child been given any medications lately?
  • Were there any difficulties during the child's birth?
  • How do you manage crying, toilet training, and discipline?
