Mechanism and Repository Study for the Red Cell Storage Duration Study

Description:

The purpose of the Mechanism and Repository Study (MARS) for the Red Cell Storage Duration Study is to examine the possible effects of the time of storage of red blood cells (RBCs) on how a participant¿s RBCs function, how fast and well a participant¿s blood clots, and how a participant¿s immune system works. We will do this by asking for some information, taking blood samples, and testing some of those samples at study laboratories. The study will also develop a large collection of blood samples for future testing related to the effect of RBC storage time on cardiac surgery patients who receive RBCs, to other laboratory predictors of cardiac surgery outcomes, and to differences between cardiac surgery patients and healthy volunteers. Participants in this study have previously agreed to participate in the research study called ¿Red Cell Storage Duration Study (RECESS)¿.
