Kristy had just returned the convertible she had ridden in during the Riverfest Parade. Then, in an instant, triumph turned to tragedy. While crossing a set of rural train tracks, her car was struck on the drivers side by a freight train. Somehow, Kristy was still alive after the impact. After being stabilized, she was airlifted to Sanford USD Medical Center where the extent of her injuries became apparent.
Kristy had suffered massive injuries, several of which could have proved fatal on their own. She suffered five broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken right ankle, a lacerated liver, a punctured lung and multiple breaks in both her jaw and pelvis. Within 24 hours Kristy also suffered a stroke. It's no surprise that during the very early stages of her hospitalization, Kristy was not expected to live. Although she needed reconstructive surgery, it was delayed for several days because doctors did not feel she would survive the anesthesia required. Kristy not only survived, she made a dramatic recovery. Many of her physicians called her recovery miraculous.
