Carotid Artery Disease
Carotid artery disease is the result of fat and cholesterol build-up inside the carotid artery in the neck. Carotid artery surgery (Carotid Endarterectomy) is a surgical procedure to remove the build-up from the carotid artery in the neck and restores adequate blood flow to the brain. Carotid Stenting is also used to restore blood flow to the brain. Dr. Schultz & Dr. Kelly are involved in FDA approved studies involving the latest in carotid stenting. The effectiveness of these new procedures in which a stent is passed from the groin and placed within the carotid artery to prevent a stroke is unsurpassed. Stroke is the third leading cause of death among adults in the US and is the leading cause of disability. Significant plaque within the carotid artery can cause TIA or stroke-like symptoms such as weakness or numbness of arms or legs, shade-like visual disturbance in one eye. Vague symptoms like dizziness, speech difficulties or blackouts can also be caused by carotid artery disease. Many patients who have no symptoms are only identified by evaluating a noise in the neck (Bruit) by a carotid doppler.
