Reach Out and Read (ROR)

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a health provider based early literacy program originally developed at Boston City Hospital in 1989 by pediatricians and educators to encourage literacy development in young patients.

 

Participating ROR Clinics:

  • Advise parents about the importance of reading with young children and offer age-appropriate tips and encouragement.
     
  • Give children from six months to five years of age a developmentally and culturally appropriate children's book to take home.

Sanford Children's CHILD Services works with the Statewide ROR program by distributing books to clinics and physicians.  Approximately 32 individual clinics and the State's Department of Health nurses in the ECE System's Region 5 the gift of understanding the importance of reading to children through this program.
