Sanford Comprehensive Breast Team

The Sanford Cancer Center prides itself on a multidisciplinary approach to tackling the most difficult and complex cancers. During your treatment, several types of healthcare professionals will be working with you to provide the best care possible.

Your breast cancer team may include, but is not limited to, the following members:

  • Dr. Miroslaw Mazurczak, as the medical team co-director and Dr. Elie Dib representing Medical Oncology bring their expertise from multiple cooperative group meetings and clinical trials to offer the most advanced and current therapies to improve breast cancer cures rates.
  • Dr. Tom Cink, fellowship trained in breast imaging, brings over a quarter century of experience focused on the rapidly changing breast imaging field. Dr. Cink’s pioneering role in image guided core biopsy provides invaluable advice in difficult and unusual cases.
  • Dr. Joel Ziebarth brings his experienced colleagues and pathology residents to review all biopsies with an emphasis on quality control as well as discussions on the quickly expanding role of biochemical markers and genomic in helping pick the “best” systemic therapies for women about to battle breast cancer.
  • Dr. Fred Lovrien provides expert advice on newer radioisotope imaging such as BSGI as well as unique situation where PET imaging can provide better decision making.
  • Dr. Steve McGraw leads the Radiation Oncology team to guide clinicians through the many sophisticated computer assisted treatment methods available at the Sanford Cancer Center.
  • Dr. Heather Karu and colleagues from Plastic Surgery will help with the issues of timing and breast reconstruction choices, especially in more advanced cancers.
  • Quinn Stein and Jay Flanagan, certified genetic counselors, offer expertise in genetic risk of breast cancer and provide guidance in the logistics of genetic testing including BRCA 1 and 2.
  • Julie Hanisch and her team from Sanford Breast Health Institute (BHI) provide the detailed support of the conference with the same passion and energy that has made BHI a household word equated with breast mammography screening and diagnostics over the last two decades.
  • A cancer focused administrative team from both Sanford Health and Sanford Clinic provide support for this ambitious effort at raising breast cancer care to a new level in this region.
