Almost 300 cancer survivors and their families recently came together on the Great Hall Stage at the Washington Pavilion to celebrate National Cancer Survivor's Day. The annual luncheon offers cancer survivors an opportunity to celebrate their lives and their journey through cancer. Today, there are more than 11 million cancer survivors in the United States.
"We're here to celebrate life … there is celebration in all this, for all of us here," said keynote speaker Carolyn Downs. Downs has touched the lives of many in our community through her ministry to those in need. During the Cancer Survivor's Luncheon, she shared her personal story of mission, dedication and encouragement from her own experiences with cancer.
"I look back and remember in each one of the steps I took through my journey, I learned a lot. My faith grew and my love for family and friends deepened," she said.
National Cancer Survivor's Day is an annual, worldwide celebration of life that is held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, Canada and other participating countries. Participants unite in a symbolic event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality.
