Lung Cancer

Lung CancerLung cancer is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both of the lungs. The majority of lung cancers begin in the bronchial tubes that conduct air in and out of the lungs.

What is the Lung/Thoracic Tumor Clinic?
Sanford’s Lung/Thoracic Tumor Clinic is a weekly morning clinic. A multidisciplinary team evaluates and makes recommendations for care of patients with tumors in the chest.

Who is on the team?
The team consists of surgeons, pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, diagnostic radiologists, interventional radiologists and palliative care specialists and an RN Coordinator.

The clinic offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach for evaluating and treating chest tumors (including lung cancer, esophageal cancer or other undiagnosed chest tumors) by providing:
  • convenience by seeing patients in one location during one morning
  • prospective prompt and timely decision making
  • advanced technologies for diagnosis and treatment
  • opportunities for participation in clinical trials
  • review by palliative care specialists for patients with advanced disease
  • 2nd opinions for patients who request them
Keppen PatientThe National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends this multidisciplinary approach for treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
