Premature infants, known as preemies, come into the world earlier than full-term infants and often begin their lives in Sanford's neonatal intensive care unit. Volunteers provide physical and mental stimulation to the hospitalized infant by rocking, cuddling, singing and supporting the infants.

Volunteers in the Birth Place greet visitors as they arrive. Answering phones, call lights and delivering flowers to patients are assigned duties to the volunteers. Volunteers will also walk new moms to the NICU and help with discharge of patients.

Do you love making crafts and want to help people at the same time? The Bottles of Hope project was started by a cancer survivor and polymer clay artist from Rhode Island and has spread internationally. Polymer clay is used to cover each bottle and can be sculpted, textured, blended or stamped to create unique pieces of art gifted to patients undergoing cancer treatments. The Bottles are easy to make-come join the fun!

Dakota Café is a bustling place where patients, families and staff catch up and get a bite to eat. Volunteers enhance the atmosphere by warmly greeting guests, carrying trays and keeping tables clean.

Hosts/Hostesses at the Cancer Center are liasons between the nursing staff and patient family/friends. Volunteers will answer the phone, provide coffee, notify Cancer Center staff of patient’s arrival, and relay messages to patient’s family and friends.

Do you want to be a kid again and love to play? The Sanford USD Medical Center Wellness Center has opportunities for individual who enjoy being with children ages 0-8 and help provide child care services while parents exercise at the Wellness Center located at 49th St. & Oxbow Ave. Volunteers play with children and interact with recreational activities for children.

The Children's Hospital at Sanford is home to both inpatient, outpatient and Physician offices. Volunteers provide patients waiting with a warm welcome and escort patients and families to test areas or patient rooms.

Gift Shop volunteers provide “retail therapy” by touching the lives of patients, families and staff that come into the gift shop. Volunteers will assist gift shop staff in maintaining outstanding customer service by generating sales, merchandising, ringing transactions, taking phone orders and delivering flowers or gifts to patients’ rooms. Gift Shop profits are used to support scholarships, patient care, programs and medical equipment here at Sanford USD Medical Center and Sanford Children’s Hospital.

When children's have surgery it can be very frightening. The Castle Cappers at Sanford provide these patients with a "fun and decorated" surgical hat. Volunteers meet once a month to cut material and assemble surgical hats. Volunteers also take the material home to complete the sewing projects.

Child’s Voice is an advocacy center for evaluating children who are suspected of being abused or neglected. As a volunteer, your primary role will be to sit with a child while his/her caregivers meet with the Child’s Voice Team. This is an opportunity to spend time with a child who could greatly benefit from the individual attention provided by an adult who cares. This is also an excellent opportunity for volunteers interested in social work. Volunteers will provide support by watching children while staff meets with parents, sitting with children and reading or playing games with children, ensuring that the children are supervised and safe.

Aged 19 and up. A background and a child abuse registry check is required by NCA Accreditation Standards. Also, preference will be given to year round volunteers.

For over 50 years volunteers at Sanford have been sewing Christmas stockings to be given to babies that are born during the holiday season. Volunteers get together one day a month to cut out and assemble red velvet Christmas stockings. Volunteers also have the benefit of delivering these special gifts to new parents during the holidays.

Sanford Orthopedics & Sports Medicine’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation assists individuals in the recovery from surgery, injuries and illnesses. We help patients develop mobility, strength, balance, activities of daily living, problem solving, swallowing, speech, memory and leisure. Volunteers in Inpatient Rehabilitation assist staff with patient therapies, cleaning and clerical support.

The Sioux Empire Medical Museum is the only medical museum in the region and is open to the public. The museum is located on the Medical Center Campus and volunteers answer questions and provide information to visitors. If you like history you will be a perfect fit for the volunteer opportunity.

Sometimes, patients do not have family or caregivers present due to absence or distance. Volunteers from No One Dies Alone provide companionship to patients who would like someone with them at the end of life. They also provide a presence to families who may need extra support during the final hours of a loved one’s life.

Enhance the patient and family experience at the OB Clinic. Volunteers may greet patients and family, give direction to waiting area/restrooms, inform OB Clinic nurse that patient has arrived, and direct patient to elevator/parking at discharge etc. Duties could also include supervision of a child while mom has lab work, etc.

Sanford has four outpatient therapy areas. Volunteers in these areas assist therapists in patient treatment. This may include, but is not limited to escorting patients, cleaning equipment, stocking items/equipment, and light clerical duties.

The Parkinson's Support Group Hostess registers members and assists with setup before meetings and take down afterwards. This is an excellent opportunity for volunteers interested in Pediatrics or Child Life. Volunteers will assist Pediatric Staff in playing and monitoring pediatric patients, washing toys, reading to patients, and rocking children. When children are hospitilized at Sanford Children's we have a school teacher who helps them keep up on their studies. Volunteers are utilized to assist school age patients with educational activities. Volunteers will interact with school age patients (5-18 years) at bedside or in a classroom at Sanford Children’s Hospital. Subject specific tutors are also needed to be "on-call' for Spanish, Physics and higher level math.

This program utilizes animals affiliated with the Animal Assisted Therapy program as a therapeutic modality to enhance emotional, physical, cognitive and social function of hospitalized patients on the cardiology, pulmonary, orthopedics/neurology and children's units. The Sanford USD Medical Center Campus covers a 6X4 block area. Many customers need assistance in finding a physicians office, patient room, outpatient testing area, cafeteria and many other areas. The Way Finding Volunteer opportunity was created to help our customers get to the area in which they are looking for. We are looking for individuals who are outgoing, friendly and can be on their feet for 4 hours and walk 2 to 6 miles during that 4 hour period.
