Radiologic technology is the science that deals with the use of X-rays for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in medicine. Radiologic technologists, or radiographers, are the terms applied to individuals qualified to use X-rays to produce images of the parts of the body for interpretation by a physician known as a radiologist.

About the Radiography Field
The increased application of radiology in medicine and industry has prompted the use of specialized personnel to ensure quality radiographs. A radiologic technologist may be employed in one or more of the following: diagnostic radiology, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonography, mammography, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, radiation therapy, education or management. Radiologic technologists may also be employed as technical advisors and/or representatives for radiologic equipment and supplies.

To qualify for a position in the field of radiologic technology, you must

  • Graduate from an accredited radiography program or equivalent
  • Earn certification by the ARRT in radiography, or equivalent
  • Possess valid state credential, if applicable

The Sanford Radiography Program in Bismarck promotes the following program effectiveness data:

  1. Students will complete the program.
  2. Students will pass the national certification examination on the first attempt.
  3. Students will be gainfully employed within 12 months post-graduation.
  4. Graduates will be satisfied with their education.
  5. Employers will be satisfied with the performance of newly hired graduates.

Sanford Medical Center sponsors the Radiography Program in Bismarck. The school is a 22-month, hospital-based, certificate program. As the program sponsor, Sanford Medical Center has primary responsibility for the professional education program and grants the terminal award – the certificate.

Sanford Medical Center is located in Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota. It is a 238-bed, nonprofit hospital accredited by the Joint Commission.

The Sanford Radiography Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Admission, Tuition & Fees

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Radiography Program may provide reasonable assistance as requested in writing by a student, as long as they are able to meet the Technical Standards for the program. Candidates will not be discriminated against based on their disabilities. Only qualified applicants will be accepted.

The Radiography Program at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, ND, is affiliated with three universities within the state:

  1. University of Mary (Bismarck)
  2. North Dakota State University (Fargo)
  3. Minot State University

Students who are attending one of the schools listed above, and have completed or are nearing completion of the requirements for the degree in Radiologic Science, may apply for entrance into the program. Applications are accepted Nov. 1 – Dec. 1 annually. Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 1, to be considered for an interview. In order to be eligible to apply, students must have an overall college GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Fargo Radiography Program

Accreditation

The Sanford Health School of Radiography is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The Sanford Medical Center School of Radiography’s current accreditation length is eight years. Sanford Health Fargo is accredited by the Joint Commission and is also recognized by the American College of Radiology as a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence. North Dakota State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Amanda Grocott
Program Director

Amanda graduated from North Dakota State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in radiologic sciences in 2010. After graduation, she began working at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as a computed tomography (CT) technologist. In 2016, she received her Master of Business Administration in health care management and became the radiology education manager at the Sanford School of Radiography in Fargo. Amanda is responsible for multiple didactic courses and is passionate about promoting lifelong learning.

Amanda cherishes the time spent with her family. She and her husband have two sons. They live in West Fargo where they enjoy spending time outdoors with their dog.

 

LaRae Close
Radiology Educator

LaRae believes mentorship is key in the development of student radiographers and that all clinical staff members play an essential role in the outcome of our graduates.

Starting at St. Luke's School of Radiography in 1989, LaRae has had the privilege of experiencing many changes throughout the imaging department. She worked as a general radiographer in the hospital setting for 10 years, during which she worked with students as a part-time faculty member. In 1999, she became a full-time clinical instructor. She continues to instruct didactic courses for positioning and image analysis. LaRae's greatest satisfaction is seeing a student develop and become a confident professional. She often gets to interact with previous graduates in the departments and loves hearing about their careers and families.

 

Sabrina Brinkman
Radiology Educator

Graduating from MeritCare School of Radiography's first Bachelor of Science class in 2001, Sabrina is excited for the opportunity to give back to the program that instilled her passion for radiology.

She is a registered radiologic technologist and educator working with students and peers, encouraging them to meet their best potential. She believes that a solid foundation is an integral piece to success.

Sabrina has worked in several imaging modalities all around the United States and has settled back home in Fargo. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and three children.

Admission, Tuition & Fees

Sanford Medical Center Fargo School of Radiography is affiliated with North Dakota State University.

The Sanford Medical Center Fargo School of Radiography is open to all candidates who have satisfactorily met or will meet the following admission requirements:

  1. Completed all internship prerequisite courses on at NDSU by the start of the internship, including resident credits at NDSU for transfer students;
  2. Earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale by internship application deadline;
  3. Been recommended by the Academic Director of the NDSU Radiologic Sciences Program.

If you are considered for the internship, you will be scheduled for a personal interview with the program director and school faculty. Up to six students are selected for admission each year. Selected applicants will be notified one week following the interview. A $250 non-refundable acceptance fee is required along with an acceptance letter. Sanford USD Medical Center operates on a nonprofit basis and is governed by a Board of Trustees for the people of the Sioux Falls area. The hospital offers many educational opportunities such as radiologic technology. Established in 1894, Sanford has more than 545 licensed beds and continues to grow as the region’s leading healthcare institution. Curriculum/Policies

Student Policies

Students will read the Sanford Medical Center Radiography Program Policy and Procedure Manual during student orientation and have an opportunity to ask questions. Students are required to comply with all of the policies, rules and regulations of Sanford Medical Center (Sioux Falls). Upon completion of the policy and procedure review, the student will sign the acknowledgment form, which becomes part of the student’s file.
