On July 20, 2010, Sanford Health and MeritCare Health System united as one organization under one name, mission, vision, values and wordmark. This followed a merger in November 2009.

Named in honor of South Dakota philanthropist, Denny Sanford, who gave a transformational gift of $400 million to Sioux Valley Health System in 2007. The gift was the largest single gift ever given to a healthcare organization.
