Guardian Angels and Grateful Patients Making a Difference
In December 2008, 4-year-old Reid Ames’ life was changed forever when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Throughout their journey, the Ames family has relied on the knowledge and care of the doctors and nurses of Sanford Health.
“We especially appreciate Dr. Kenien. He is an integral part of a small group that we can’t imagine our life without,” said Brooke Ames, Reid’s mother. “Dr. Kenien and his team held our hands through the scary stuff, taught us what we never thought we would understand and have constantly reminded us that we can do this.”
“We wanted to recognize Dr. Kenien for the care and concern that he showed Reid and my family over the last four years,” Brooke said. “He welcomed our calls, even on the weekends, and his follow up outside of clinic hours have made the difference in our coping successfully with Reid’s disease.”
While Reid still works to regulate his blood sugar, he and his family know their support system at Sanford Health will always be there, anytime of day or night. “Dr. Kenien has been the calm in our storm for the past four years – he is our guardian angel.”
The Guardian Angel program provides a unique way for patients and families to thank a Sanford doctor, nurse, staff member or volunteer who has made the hospital experience special. A donation to the program in his or her name not only recognizes exceptional care, but will enhance patient experiences in the future.
Gifts to the program are used to expand programs and services, provide advanced training for medical staff and purchase state-of-the art equipment. Those honored as Guardian Angels receive a beautiful angel pin to wear proudly.
