Sanford Health received an American Diabetes Association Award for participation in the 2008 Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes. The Diabetes Walk was held in October 2008 at the Fargodome.
Julie Blehm, MD, Chairwoman of the American Diabetes Association Board of Directors, North Dakota and Northwestern Minnesota Affiliate, was presented the 2008 National Award from the American Diabetes Association for the greatest participation growth overall in the Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes. From 2007 to 2008 the growth was 260%. The award marked a tremendous achievement for the Fargo event.
Diabetes is linked to nearly 300,000 deaths a year, and increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease and blindness. Every 21 seconds someone in the country is diagnosed with diabetes. It is estimated that nearly 21million people in the United States have diabetes, with one-third of the group going undiagnosed.
The ADA Step Out Walk plays an important role in raising awareness, and in funding research to fight diabetes through prevention and treatment advancements.
